Claim it
Say on the issue that you would like to take it. A Committer of the repository can assign it to you.

Fork and branch
Fork the repository, create a branch, and build and test your change locally.

Sign every commit
Sign off for the Developer Certificate of Origin and GPG-sign: git commit --signoff -S.

Open a pull request
The repository's Committers review it and merge it once it meets the project's standards.
